Coinbase stock took a hit on Monday, slipping more than 4% to close around $159.89 as investors braced for the company's second-quarter earnings report. The dip reflects ongoing pressure on crypto trading volumes amid a challenging macroeconomic backdrop and geopolitical uncertainty.

Set to release earnings after the market closes on July 30, Coinbase is expected to report earnings per share near $0.15 on revenues of approximately $1.31 billion. Despite these modest expectations, the stock has endured a tough year, losing over 57% of its value in the past 12 months and dropping roughly 32% since the start of the year. Current market capitalization stands close to $42.37 billion, a far cry from the 52-week peak of $402.16 but still above the recent low of $139.18.

Mixed Analyst Views on Coinbase's Path Forward

Investor caution remains high as concerns over interest rates and geopolitical tensions continue to dampen crypto trading volumes, a key revenue source for Coinbase given its reliance on transaction fees. Yet some analysts remain optimistic. Rosenblatt, for example, reaffirmed a Buy rating with a $240 price target, highlighting that while core crypto trading might weaken, Coinbase’s expansion into derivatives, prediction markets, and stablecoin infrastructure could drive future growth. The firm values the stock at 25 times its 2027 adjusted EBITDA forecast.

Similarly, US Tiger Securities raised its price target to $250 but forecasts a revenue decline to $1.22 billion in Q2, down 14% from the previous quarter and 19% year-over-year. Adjusted EBITDA is also expected to fall. Benchmark holds a Buy rating with a $270 target, while Raymond James initiated coverage with a Market Perform rating and a fair value estimate close to current levels. This divergence shows the uncertainty around Coinbase’s ability to offset slowing spot trading with new product lines.

Coinbase’s efforts to pivot toward derivatives and prediction markets come as the industry navigates a complex regulatory landscape and shifting investor sentiment. The company’s upcoming results will be closely watched for signs of resilience or further challenges in the crypto trading arena.
