Coinbase activated USDC payment acceptance from AI agents this week, rolling it out for its Business customers.

The new feature is built on Coinbase’s own x402 payment standard and targets merchants and developers aiming to sell directly to autonomous software, as well as retail traders using AI agents to carry out trades automatically.

AI-driven traffic has already started surpassing human users on sections of Coinbase’s platform, making this move timely for businesses wanting to capture automated demand.

With this update, businesses using Coinbase Business accounts can receive instant, irreversible USDC payments from AI agents with no additional setup required. The system processes settlements via Coinbase Payments and includes reusable payment links and automatic collection of buyer data to simplify reconciliation.

Sid Coelho-Prabhu, head of Coinbase Business, explained that this essentially replicates the classic buyer-seller exchange but for a new kind of consumer: software agents. These agents use Coinbase’s developer documentation to create wallets and then access merchant inventories through an agent-friendly checkout experience.

also Coinbase released the CDP x402 SDK, which allows developers to easily add agent payment acceptance to their APIs or web services with minimal coding just three lines needed. The SDK bundles Coinbase’s pre-configured x402 standard, streamlining what would otherwise require stitching together various payment parts.

This shift reflects a broader trend where AI tools increasingly perform financial transactions, reshaping how businesses approach payments and customer interaction.
