On July 23, 2026, Coinbase announced that businesses using Coinbase Business can start accepting USDC payments initiated by autonomous AI agents.
This feature leverages Coinbase's native support for the x402 protocol, facilitating pay-per-use online transactions. Businesses will be able to receive, track, reconcile, and cash out these AI-driven payments using the same accounts they already have.
Coinbase highlighted that in June, traffic generated by software surpassed human visits on its Base documentation pages, revealing the growing dominance of automated tools in online environments. Traditional payment systems still typically expect a human action, which leaves a gap for developers and businesses wanting to properly serve autonomous software.
The new payments feature is powered by Coinbase Payments, and Coinbase Business also offers rewards on eligible idle USDC balances, with current rates around 3.35% annually, though rates vary by region.
Coinbase emphasized that USDC payments under this system carry no chargeback risk since the platform does not act as an intermediary in transactions between businesses and their customers.
Alongside payment updates, Coinbase for Agents has added live market viewing tools and conditional trading commands. AI agents can now stream open orders, observe order books, and monitor price and volume data in real time.
Users are able to set triggering conditions for actions like selling assets if Bitcoin drops below a threshold or canceling orders after a set time period, using guardrails they define themselves.
Previously, Coinbase for Agents supported AI tools in trading and portfolio management through linked accounts, but these new functions expand the scope for automated financial workflows.
To simplify integration, Coinbase Developer Platform introduced the CDP x402 SDK. This kit helps developers add agent payment acceptance to APIs, Model Context Protocol servers, or web services with minimal coding, preconfigured with Coinbase’s recommended infrastructure. It uses the HTTP 402 "Payment Required" response to communicate payment instructions directly between clients and services.
Coinbase’s earlier launch of AI-driven payment and trading tools set the stage for these latest enhancements, reflecting the company’s push towards supporting autonomous financial activity.
