Brian Armstrong, CEO of Coinbase, shared his views on how artificial intelligence's rapid advancement will actually boost the role of cryptocurrencies rather than overshadow them. He explained this perspective through a post on X, where he described AI and crypto as complementary technologies instead of rivals.
Armstrong highlighted that while AI has become a dominant technology trend, cryptocurrencies remain key as a form of general-purpose infrastructure, comparable to electricity or the internet. He suggested blockchain and digital assets will be key tools enabling AI systems to perform financial transactions effectively in the near future.
The Coinbase chief emphasized that autonomous AI agents will require smooth and programmable payment systems, something current traditional financial services struggle to provide. Since AI agents cannot open bank accounts or wait for slow international transfers, cryptocurrencies offer real-time payment solutions that better suit this emerging landscape.
Looking ahead, Armstrong envisions AI agents handling more complex economic tasks independently, including fund management, trading, investment advisory, and capital raising. This evolution would rely heavily on blockchain infrastructure to secure and facilitate these financial operations.
Interest in merging AI with blockchain is growing across tech companies, especially around decentralized finance (DeFi), smart contracts, and tokenization integrated with AI-driven platforms. This fusion is seen as a major development frontier within the sector.
The market response to Armstrong’s remarks was muted, with digital asset prices holding steady shortly after his comments.
