Brian Armstrong, CEO of Coinbase, laid out a bold vision where AI software agents handle transactions and manage money independently, using crypto as their financial backbone. He disputes the idea that crypto companies must leave digital assets behind to chase AI. Instead, he argues the two technologies are deeply complementary, with AI providing intelligence and crypto offering programmable money rails.

Armstrong described Agentic Finance or AiFi as a new frontier where autonomous software can hold funds, make payments, trade assets, and even manage entire portfolios without human involvement. For these agents to operate effectively, they need real-time digital payment systems unavailable in traditional banking, which isn’t designed for software that spends on its own.

Supporting this vision, Coinbase has rolled out tools like Base, the USDC stablecoin, and the x402 protocol, which power most agentic payments today. In June 2026, Coinbase launched Coinbase for Agents, enabling developers to set spending limits and control what services autonomous software can access.

Armstrong also pointed out that AI agents may eventually outpace humans in daily transaction volume by covering costs such as data, cloud services, and investment activities. Their functions could extend from bill paying and tax planning to raising or borrowing capital for projects blurring lines between software and financial market participants.

The x402 Foundation, operated under the Linux Foundation, has gained support from major tech firms, reflecting growing interest in infrastructure that facilitates these autonomous AI-driven payments.

Recent trends showing AI’s impact on financial markets underline the potential scale of what's coming. Armstrong’s vision positions crypto not just as a payment tool but as essential infrastructure for the autonomous future.
