Cloudflare unveiled cloudflare.id this week, a persistent identity system paired with a wallet that lets AI agents transact independently across the web. More than half of today's internet traffic already comes from bots. This new infrastructure legitimizes that reality by giving machines their own verifiable identity and access to stablecoin payments.
The wallet connects directly to x402, an open protocol Cloudflare built with Coinbase through the x402 Foundation. When an AI agent needs to pay for API access, premium data, or a service, it settles instantly in USDC on Base, Coinbase's layer-2 blockchain. No prior account setup. No login flow. No checkout. The payment clears at the edge.
Trust infrastructure for autonomous commerce
Cloudflare positioned itself as the verification layer for an economy increasingly run by machines. The company introduced Web Bot Auth and worked with Visa on the Trusted Agent Protocol, now baked into Visa Intelligent Commerce. Mastercard and American Express also joined the payment integration, allowing agents to transact securely without merchants ever seeing sensitive user credentials.
A second layer came through partnership with Experian. The Agent Trust identity framework adds extra verification checks. Earlier this year Cloudflare and GoDaddy announced joint work on standards for agent transparency and control, recognizing that as autonomous systems handle real money, merchants and users need clarity on what agents can actually do.
The x402 standard and Monetization Gateway
The x402 protocol uses HTTP 402 responses to trigger payments whenever an agent hits a paywall or restricted resource. Launched in 2025, it eliminates friction between machine and merchant. An AI tool analyzing market data, running simulations, or pulling proprietary datasets simply pays on contact. Settlement happens instantly across the Base network.
Cloudflare plans to roll out its Monetization Gateway on July 1, 2026, letting website owners, API providers, and data publishers charge agents for access. The company upgraded its Agents SDK to support x402 natively, so developers can manage both authentication and payments programmatically rather than hand-coding each transaction layer.
This infrastructure shift reflects where crypto infrastructure is actually moving. Rather than grand narratives about decentralization, the work is unglamorous plumbing. Stablecoins provide the settlement rail. Base provides the throughput. Protocols like x402 provide the standards that let systems talk. And identity layers ensure nobody gets defrauded in the process.
