Circle Internet Group has expanded its intellectual property portfolio by acquiring over 680 patent families from IBM, covering almost 1,000 issued patents worldwide. This acquisition focuses on blockchain, payments, banking, insurance, supply chains, and cloud technology.
The deal, announced on July 27, positions Circle as the leading U.S. holder of blockchain patents. Although financial terms were not disclosed, Circle plans to use this expanded portfolio to support its stablecoin USDC, the Circle Payments Network (CPN), and its Arc platform, which targets faster settlement for financial institutions using stablecoins.
The patents include inventions related to blockchain infrastructure, enterprise systems, and secure cloud operations, providing Circle with a broader base to enhance its digital finance products. Circle’s general counsel emphasized the importance of intellectual property for advancing onchain infrastructure, though patents themselves don’t guarantee market success or regulatory approval.
The Circle Payments Network enables direct communication and settlement between banks, with Circle supplying the underlying technology. Meanwhile, Arc is designed for stablecoin payments, foreign exchange, and treasury functions within capital markets. This move strengthens Circle’s foundation in these areas and may pave the way for further collaboration with IBM.
