Circle Internet Group, known for issuing the USDC stablecoin, has secured a massive blockchain patent portfolio from IBM. The deal, announced July 27, grants Circle control over nearly 1,000 patents worldwide, spanning key areas like blockchain infrastructure, financial services, and secure cloud operations. Financial details of the purchase remain confidential.
The acquisition instantly positions Circle as the top blockchain patent holder in the United States. This expanded intellectual property base will support Circle's core projects, including USDC, the Circle Payments Network, and its enterprise blockchain platform, Arc.
Strengthening Blockchain Foundations
Sarah Wilson, Circle's general counsel, stressed the importance of intellectual property in scaling onchain finance. She highlighted IBM’s legacy in technological breakthroughs and said the portfolio acquisition enhances Circle’s capacity to develop global, internet-native financial infrastructure. Circle also revealed plans to partner with IBM on further commercial ventures, though details have yet to emerge.
USDC currently ranks as the second-largest stablecoin, with a market cap around $72.5 billion according to CoinGecko data from late July. Circle trades publicly on the NYSE under the ticker CRCL.
This patent deal complements Circle’s recent expansion efforts, including its approval for a national trust bank charter by the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency and a successful $222 million presale round for its Arc blockchain. The company has not specified how it will implement or commercialize the newly acquired patents.
CME's recent expansion of single-stock futures and Circle’s growing patent portfolio both highlight accelerating institutional interest in blockchain technologies and traditional finance convergence.
