Celsius Holdings got slapped with reality Thursday morning. The energy drink maker's stock tanked 16% in premarket trading after posting Q2 numbers that disappointed investors on basically every metric that matters. The adjusted EPS came in at $0.36, missing consensus by $0.07. Revenue landed at $817.9 million, below the $885.98 million estimate. Even adjusted EBITDA fell short, hitting $184.2 million instead of the expected $196 million.
The stock now trades around $24.27, a brutal drop from its 52-week high of $66.74. That's the kind of move that forces portfolio managers to have uncomfortable conversations with their limited partners.
The Celsius Brand Is Actually Shrinking
Here's where it gets uncomfortable. The company's namesake brand, the one that built the entire business, saw revenue fall 11.7% year-over-year. Margins got crushed too, contracting to 48.1% from 51.5% a year ago. Management blamed higher promotional spending, inventory rebalancing issues, softness in club distribution, and SKU optimization from recent deals. Translation: they're fighting for shelf space and losing.
Celsius brand retail sales dropped 2% in the quarter. Rockstar Energy was even worse, slipping 13%. The portfolio's gross margin compression tells the real story. Aluminum cost inflation plus aggressive discounting created a margin squeeze that no amount of volume growth can fix.
Alani Nu Carries the Weight
If Celsius Holdings has a future, it's wearing Alani Nu's jersey. The brand generated $364.4 million in revenue and posted retail sales growth of 55.7% year-over-year. A limited-time Purple Cotton Candy flavor helped drive momentum, but the real story is the transition into PepsiCo's distribution system, which is opening new retail doors. Rockstar Energy contributed $66.5 million to the quarter.
Portfolio retail sales overall jumped 31% year-over-year, which sounds solid until you realize the flagship brand is actually declining. International revenue did rise 10%, offering at least one bright spot in a quarter full of misses. But one bright brand and modest international growth can't offset the core business deteriorating in your home market.
