Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong introduced a vision where cryptocurrencies become the backbone of payments for autonomous AI software. His company is already developing solutions that enable AI agents to hold crypto wallets, make purchases, and settle payments instantly without relying on traditional banks.
Why AI Needs Crypto Instead of Banks
AI agents, essentially software programs, cannot open standard bank accounts because they lack legal identities and cannot complete the verification steps banks require. This limitation prevents them from handling payments through traditional financial systems.
Crypto wallets bypass this hurdle by allowing AI to transfer digital assets directly. These wallets enable agents to pay for resources like data, computing power, or online services instantly, without manual approval or slow bank transfers.
Small-value transactions are especially well-served by crypto, as traditional banks often struggle with micro-payments. For example, an AI agent might pay just a few cents for a single data query, with cryptocurrencies settling these amounts smoothly within seconds.
Coinbase’s x402 Protocol Enables Machine-to-Machine Payments
Launched in May 2025, Coinbase’s x402 payment protocol leverages the HTTP 402 code, previously unused, to automate payments for web content and API services. Primarily using USDC stablecoins on Coinbase’s Base Layer 2 network, x402 keeps transaction costs low while providing a reliable payment option.
The protocol has already processed over 100 million machine-to-machine transactions in nine months, with a recent 30-day volume surpassing $24 million. In May 2026 alone, it handled 3.1 million transactions valued at approximately $1.2 million.
Base and USDC play significant roles in this emerging payment ecosystem. Over 90% of agent-related stablecoin payments occur on Base, which offers faster settlements and lower fees than many major blockchains. USDC gives AI agents a stable currency to manage budgets and control spending limits effectively.
Though x402’s volume is still small compared to global card networks, it marks a new frontier for automated commerce.
Tools for Autonomous AI Finance
In June 2026, Coinbase launched Coinbase for Agents, a platform that equips developers with tools to let AI systems trade, spend, and manage funds under predefined rules. Companies can set spending caps and control how agents operate financially, ensuring security and compliance.
This approach signals a shift towards what Armstrong calls "agentic finance," a new model where AI-driven economic activity integrates closely with crypto infrastructure.
