BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) just recorded a fresh $183 million purchase, continuing a relentless streak of large institutional inflows into Bitcoin this summer. This recent buy adds to a series of nine-figure daily investments that reveal how steadily BlackRock's clients have been channeling capital into Bitcoin through regulated ETF channels.
Just weeks ago on July 6, investors put in $209 million through IBIT, responsible for nearly 80% of total US spot Bitcoin ETF inflows that day which hit $266 million. Then on July 15, another $139 million went into IBIT, with an additional $80.82 million inflow pushing that day's share to 75% of ETF-based Bitcoin buying. Around July 22, $163 million more was added, collectively bringing July’s IBIT inflows to well over $700 million.
Dominance and Risks of Concentration
Since early January, BlackRock clients have bought thousands of Bitcoin through IBIT, including a record-setting $372 million purchase of nearly 4,000 BTC on January 5. By mid-July, BlackRock managed custody of over 734,000 BTC, controlling about 50-60% of all spot Bitcoin ETF assets this year. Other ETFs like Fidelity's FBTC and ARK's ARKB compete for the remaining market share, but BlackRock’s grip remains dominant.
This concentration raises concerns. When one player holds such a massive portion of ETF-based Bitcoin exposure, any shifts in BlackRock's investment strategy, fee changes or evolving regulations could ripple strongly through the market. Institutional appetite for Bitcoin isn't fading, but the ecosystem's reliance on a single giant is a critical detail for watchers.
