South Korea's second-largest crypto exchange just locked in a 2028 IPO target. The catch: it's a three-year rebuild of everything regulators care about, which means accounting standards, risk controls, and the kind of transparency that currently doesn't exist. Bithumb knows the bar is high now.
The company announced the timeline Monday with a detailed roadmap covering three distinct phases. Through 2026, it's switching from Korean GAAP to the international reporting standards that listed companies use. They're bringing in external accounting firms, tightening employee controls, and restructuring divisions to kill conflicts of interest. By 2027, they'll file for preliminary listing approval. If authorities sign off, the IPO closes in 2028.
None of this happens in a vacuum. Bithumb had previously targeted a 2025 listing, then pushed it to early 2028 at a March shareholder meeting. Now it's spelling out exactly what needs to happen before any exchange can touch a Korean stock exchange. The company's separated its asset management arm from the exchange to simplify the corporate structure and give investors something cleaner to audit.
Why the long runway matters
Bithumb isn't just optimizing spreadsheets. It's signaling that going public in crypto requires building the same institutional plumbing that traditional finance took decades to perfect. The exchange is explicitly working to reduce exposure to market swings by diversifying revenue and maintaining liquid buffers. In a sector where volatility is the default state, that's a deliberate choice to look boring to regulators.
The company also flagged that market conditions and regulatory timelines could shift the schedule. In other words: if the crypto market crashes or Seoul tightens rules, all bets are off. But the roadmap itself is the message. Bithumb is saying it's serious enough to overhaul operations on a multi-year timeline instead of chasing a quick exit.
