Bitcoin developers backing the BIP-110 proposal have dusted off a nuclear option. If miners refuse to signal support for the update, they're prepared to alter the network's entire proof-of-work algorithm, a move that would instantly render every ASIC miner obsolete and force a complete rebuild of Bitcoin's mining infrastructure.

The Contingency Code Is Already Built

Chris Guida announced he's adapted code originally written by Luke Dashjr back in 2017, porting it onto Bitcoin Knots. The tool sits ready to deploy if the BIP-110 soft fork proposal stalls at the miner signaling stage. "I think we need to keep this option open in case miners decide to conspire to betray Bitcoin," Guida said. It's not a threat meant casually. A proof-of-work change would force the entire mining ecosystem to retool, making current hardware worthless and handing advantage to whoever controls new ASIC production first.

What BIP-110 Actually Does

The update itself is less dramatic than its Plan B suggests. Formally called the "Reduced Data Temporary Softfork," BIP-110 would tighten restrictions on arbitrary data storage in Bitcoin transactions. It caps new transaction outputs, OP_RETURN fields, and witness data for roughly one year before the rules expire automatically. The point is to reduce blockchain bloat from projects dumping metadata onto Bitcoin without paying for it.

The real friction isn't about data storage. It's about authority. BIP-110 backers believe miners shouldn't unilaterally decide which protocol changes activate. Mechanic, another proposal supporter, framed it plainly: miners are participants in the network, not its legislators. If they block what the development community considers necessary maintenance, the community has use.

A Threat Designed Not to Be Used

Luke Dashjr acknowledged the proof-of-work fork exists as insurance, not an actual plan. "I hope we won't need it, but it's useful to have it ready," he said. The theory is that miners, knowing a failed BIP-110 veto could trigger total algorithmic overhaul, will signal support preemptively. It's deterrence through credible capability. Whether miners actually feel deterred, or whether the Bitcoin community would ever follow through, remains untested. The fact that developers are openly discussing it suggests frustration has reached the point where they're willing to hint at the nuclear option.
