Bitcoin dropped below $63,000, settling at its lowest in about 10 days amid growing concerns from both the corporate and regulatory sides of crypto. Coinbase reported $1.22 billion in Q2 revenue, falling 19% year over year and missing analyst expectations by $80 million. This miss triggered a sharp selloff in Coinbase shares, which tumbled up to 14% in after-hours trading.
Coinbase’s performance is seen as a bellwether for market activity since its earnings rely heavily on trading volumes. The decline signals a real contraction in crypto trading, casting a shadow over market momentum. Meanwhile, efforts to pass the Clarity Act a bill meant to clarify the regulatory boundaries between the SEC and CFTC stalled in the Senate right before the August recess. Opposition at the state level and tight congressional deadlines slowed progress to a crawl, leaving the bill’s fate uncertain for weeks.
Adding to the negative sentiment, Strategy Inc., known for holding one of the largest corporate Bitcoin treasuries, also posted disappointing earnings. This combination of corporate setbacks and stalled legislation has sapped some optimism from the market.
