Bitcoin slipped below $64,000 ahead of Wednesday's Federal Reserve rate announcement, dipping nearly 2% over the past day. The cryptocurrency now hovers around $63,683, carrying a market cap close to $1.28 trillion as traders grapple with unusually divided expectations for the Fed's move.
Fed Hike Odds Reflect Unprecedented Market Uncertainty
The CME FedWatch tool currently assigns about a 31.5% probability that the Fed will raise interest rates, with close to 69% betting on a hold. This lack of consensus stands out because, since March 2020, Fed meetings rarely saw such split forecasts. Futures markets have fluctuated within a 10-percentage-point range just in the last month, signaling a market unsure whether to prepare for tighter or steady policy.
Former Fed Chair Kevin Warsh eliminated forward guidance, blurring clarity about policymakers’ intentions. This shift ended nearly two years of near-unanimous market pricing. The June 17 meeting, by contrast, featured a unanimous decision to keep rates at 3.50% to 3.75%, but the tone of their statement hinted firmly that future easing wouldn’t come soon. The committee emphasized delivering price stability, suggesting inflation remains a key concern.
Inflation Data and Hawkish Voices Complicate Predictions
Recent inflation numbers do not clearly back a hike. Consumer prices dropped 0.4% in June the largest monthly decline since April 2020 yet annual inflation pressures still complicate the picture. At the Fed’s last meeting in April, four officials dissented, the biggest split since 1992. Three opposed easing from a hawkish standpoint while one argued for immediate cuts. Experts expect such divisions to persist, as TD Securities predicts dissent from some Fed members again this week.
Bitcoin’s market behavior reflects these ambiguities. While some traders anticipate a pause, others brace for tightening, causing the cryptocurrency's price to drift lower. This scenario contrasts with the more predictable market reactions seen earlier in the pandemic era, marking a new phase of volatility that investors must carefully monitor.
