The upgrade lets the consensus engine finalize blocks in milliseconds while execution processes queued blocks continuously, smoothing out traffic spikes that previously caused delays.

This change targets the bottleneck created by synchronous execution, where each block waits on the one before it to finish running. SAE separates consensus and execution, allowing consensus to keep moving fast while execution catches up in a stream. Validators and node operators experience new workflows, and dApp developers can expect more consistent latency under heavy loads. For end users, this could mean snappier responses during transaction surges.

The approach aims to maintain Avalanche’s solid security by keeping the consensus layer lean and battle-tested, pushing the heavier execution tasks to a dedicated lane with tight coordination rules. This method helps contain risks like forks or liveness failures while improving throughput and reducing jitter.

With the current race among layer 1 blockchains to improve speed without sacrificing security, Avalanche’s SAE offers a fresh way to handle irregular bursts of activity such as mints or liquidations that cause micro-traffic jams. By decoupling consensus from execution, Avalanche hopes to deliver faster, more reliable finality under pressure.
