Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, has publicly challenged the popular idea that making AI model weights openly available helps build safety measures more effectively. He argues that releasing weights for cutting-edge AI systems removes control, preventing companies from revoking access, applying patches, or monitoring usage.
Concerns Over Frontier AI and National Security
Amodei draws a firm line between smaller open models, which he sees as beneficial for innovation and competition, and advanced frontier AI models where unrestricted access could lead to significant harm. He labeled the open release of such powerful models as a “dangerous path” during a 2023 Senate hearing. In recent developments, both Anthropic and OpenAI have urged US policymakers to be cautious about Chinese open-weight AI models. The fear is that if China releases these models without safety restrictions, hostile actors could gain dangerous capabilities that Western firms intentionally limit.
In response, US regulators reviewed policies on open AI weights but found insufficient evidence to impose broad restrictions, valuing the benefits smaller open models provide for research and competition.
This debate has implications for the crypto world. Though cryptocurrency hasn’t featured directly in these discussions, any new regulatory frameworks restricting frontier AI distribution could affect decentralized AI projects running on blockchain infrastructure. Such projects might face tougher rules if Amodei’s stance shapes policy. Conversely, if open-weight supporters maintain influence and the government stays hands-off, it would reinforce the idea that open access to powerful technology actually enhances safety.
the US review concluded that the advantages of accessible smaller AI models outweigh the risks, a position that could shape both AI and crypto landscapes going forward.
