Andreessen Horowitz is financing a biotech company’s IPO as it steps further away from its crypto roots. Braveheart Bio, a clinical-stage drug developer focused on heart disease, filed to raise nearly $319 million on Nasdaq under the symbol BRVE. This marks a notable shift for the VC firm known for betting big on crypto and Web3 projects.

Braveheart Bio, founded less than a year ago, is working on an oral treatment for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), a condition that thickens heart muscle and hampers blood flow. Their leading candidate, BHB-1893, is a cardiac myosin inhibitor licensed from Chinese pharmaceutical giant Jiangsu Hengrui. Despite no approved drugs yet its lead asset is still in Phase 2 trials the company aims for a $1.2 billion valuation, highlighting investor confidence driven by positive clinical trial data released earlier this year.

Shifts in Venture Capital Strategy

This deal is powered by a16z Bio + Health, the health-focused arm of Andreessen Horowitz, which is increasingly active outside of crypto. The $318.8 million raise has the backing of other biotech investors including Forbion and OrbiMed, with industry veteran Chris Viehbacher, former CEO of Biogen, leading the board. Braveheart plans to launch global Phase 3 trials soon, betting on regulatory progress in the U.S. and beyond.

This move comes after a16z made headlines with a record $4.5 billion crypto fund in 2022. Their pivot to backing biotech IPOs signals a broader, more diversified strategy. Digital asset investors and biotech watchers alike should note that venture capital dollars are flowing into life sciences innovation more aggressively than before.
