Amazon's $2.5 billion settlement with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is stirring up attention as the deadline for eligible Prime customers to claim compensation approaches on July 27th. Despite Amazon's denial of any wrongdoing, the company agreed to pay $1.5 billion in refunds and an additional $1 billion in civil penalties to resolve allegations of enrolling millions without clear consent.
Who Qualifies for the Settlement?
The lawsuit targeted Amazon’s practices between June 23, 2019, and June 23, 2025, where customers were allegedly enrolled into Prime subscriptions through complicated sign-up flows or faced hurdles when trying to cancel online. These sign-up methods include Amazon’s universal Prime decision page, shipping selection page, one-page checkout, and the Prime Video enrollment process.
To be eligible, customers must have been U.S.-based Amazon Prime members who either signed up via these challenged pages or tried unsuccessfully to cancel their subscription online during the specified period. also they should have used three or fewer Prime benefits within any 12-month window after enrollment.
Claim Process and Payment Details
Some customers received automatic payments last November and December, but many still need to file claims. Notices have been sent via mail or email to those who might be eligible. Claim submissions can be made through the official settlement website or by contacting the settlement administrator directly.
Approved claimants could receive up to $51, with payment options including checks, PayPal, or Venmo transfers. Amazon plans to disburse payments by late 2026, although the exact date remains unconfirmed.
Implications and Next Steps
While Amazon faces this settlement, the episode sheds light on the challenges consumers encounter with subscription services and the importance of transparent consent. For those affected, the looming deadline means swift action is necessary to ensure they receive due compensation.
