Alphabet shares jumped around 6%, fueled by renewed investor confidence in the company’s ambitious push to expand its AI infrastructure. The tech giant plans to pour roughly $119 billion into capital spending in the second half of 2026, a significant increase aimed at boosting its AI and cloud capabilities.
This massive spending effort includes accelerating investment from the $44.9 billion spent in Q2 to nearly $59.7 billion per quarter. Management highlighted that this influx will ramp up computing power, data centers, networking, and AI-specific hardware to meet soaring demand from Google Cloud and other AI services.
Balancing Growth with Cash Flow Concerns
Despite the enthusiasm around AI, Alphabet’s free cash flow turned negative in Q2, signaling short-term financial pressure. CFO Anat Ashkenazi confirmed that cash flow will remain strained as capacity expands faster than originally planned. Still, Alphabet’s massive $242 billion cash reserve offers ample flexibility and reassures investors about the company’s long-term strategy.
Google Cloud’s revenue surge of 82% and continued growth in search revenue helped restore faith after an initial post-earnings slump. Wall Street analysts are now less worried about the upfront costs, instead focusing on whether the AI investments will quickly translate into higher revenue and improved margins. As a result, Alphabet’s stock rose above $356, marking an 11% jump over the past week and cooling talks of downside hedging.
Alphabet’s betting big on AI, a move that echoes trends seen across the tech sector but on an unprecedented scale. The company’s success hinges on whether the demand for advanced AI and cloud tools keeps accelerating, convincing customers to invest in these cutting-edge technologies.
